I was thinking about this at CKU as I roamed the halls camera free for the first time in all the years I have attended. Now, don't get me wrong, I still love to take photos and scrap but there is a joy in the freedom to just meet and greet and take those photos in your mind with your heart's camera.
Looking back on my childhood I have few photos but the ones I have are treasured. There are even fewer of my parents and grandparents, but I have special memories that I replay over and over again. Will the child who has to hire a Mac truck to move all of his 12 x 12 albums when he leaves home value them as much as I do an album or two and a handful of miscellaneous photos? Will they revert to taking few photos because of our overkill? I don't know.
I think the sudden ease and low cost of taking and printing photos really caused us to think that every moment needed to be recorded. I think just as the hobby of scrapbooking is maturing, so will our ideas of how many photos we really need. It's great to be able to do it and if we enjoy it, we should go for it, but being practical -how many albums can we really store? I know that I do not need to record every second of my life, but recording as much as I want is fun and so easy!
As an empty nester I don't have little kids at home for my subjects but I find myself asking other folks if I can take photos of their cute kids. It's probably a good thing my child is grown and away from home.
I'm not against taking lots of photos-not at all-but I'm just thinking that we need to put the camera down long enough to enjoy the memories that we are creating. Creating is even more important than recording them with our camera. And if we miss some good shots, the heart does a pretty good job of storing special moments for us and the mind does a great job of replaying-with photos!
Don't feel guilty if you leave your camera at home from time to time. Let your child see your smiling face as you applaud their accomplishments, not just the half that the camera isn't covering. Let someone else be the photographer for you from time to time and just enjoy!
